Ethereum: Does Bitcoin still use the IRC channel?

Recently, I was facing a thinking article on Bitcoin Media, where author Jeff Garzzik made an interesting discovery about the IRC channel used by Bitcoin-QT. In this article, I will look into the history of the IRC channel and its current state.

As it turns out, the Bitcoin-QT no longer uses IRC (Internet relay conversations) boot protocol to start its Blockchain. This means that if you close or run a new Bitcoin-QT, your entire network would be lost, including all operations, wallets and other connected assemblies.

This decision was mainly due to concern for decentralization, security and user experience. Famous Bitcoin creator Jeff Garzzik, an interview with Bitcoin Media, explained his reasoning:

“… IRC Bootstrap is basically one of the failure point … If you turn off or run a server, you will effectively lose all your user relationships with Blockchain.”

What about the IRC channel? Does it still exist and serve for any purpose? The answer is as follows. Although Bitcoin-QT no longer uses IRC boot, the IRC channel is not completely dead.

According to the article about Cryptoslat, the IRC channel was transferred to a new server called IRC.Electrum.org. This means that if you are connected to the network via Electrum (popular Bitcoin wallet and customer), your connection should remain active. However, if you disconnect from a network using another tool or platform, such as the IRC customer or web interface, your connection will be terminated.

So what can we take away from it? Obviously, Jeff Garzikas correctly watched his observation about Bitcoin-QT’s confidence in IRC boot. The decision to abandon this protocol had a significant impact on the stability and security of the network. Nevertheless, the IRC channel remains functional, albeit with certain restrictions.

As developers, the latest changes in the Bitcoin ecosystem, including changes in protocols and infrastructure, are constantly updated. By doing so, we can better understand the complexity of decentralized systems and how they develop over time.

In conclusion, although the Bitcoin-QT no longer uses the IRC boot, the IRC channel itself is still active and serves for its purpose. This emphasizes the importance of taking into account the effects of decentralization in creating blockchain and the need for constant cooperation of developers to ensure the stability and security of these systems.
